Manganese steel castings and welding
When welding manganese steel castings what precautions need to be considered in the process ?
The manganese casting must be kept cool during the welding procedure. Because of its high coefficient of expansion and low thermal conductivity, the steel is sensitive to thermal distortions and local excessive heating. Considering the fact that exposing the casting to long duration's of temperatures higher than 570 deg F will induce carbide precipitations which basically decrease toughness and non-magnetism properties. When welding it is best to keep the casting partially submerged in water to disperse heat. Water cooling after each pass of weld is recommended as well.
